Edson Continuing Care is a part of the new Edson health centre, currently under construction in Edson AB. I worked on this project from DD through to bid at Dialog in 2013.
The building takes cues from the adjacent hospital building, carrying the dark brick and phenolic panel, and adding in the white siding, to introduce more domestic cues.
The courtyard plan allows a controlled environment for residents to enjoy, the south wing is single story to maintain solar access to this space.
The west face of Continuing care completes a courtyard with wings of the adjacent hospital.
A green-house and raised planters were introduced for therapeutic gardening year-round.
The courtyard garden was carefully arranged, and plantings gradated to maintain privacy for resident rooms facing into the courtyard at ground level.
Phenolic wood finishes characterize the main entry, with the community hall and courtyard beyond immediately visible.
The main living space for each of the four self contained 'houses' domestic elements were emphasized, and resident room entry's containing mail receptacle and space for personalization were included.
'Main Street' Contained public services like communal laundry, hair Salon & Community Hall. Visible on the right is the day centre 'great room'
Another view of the 'Main Street' with the more public-focussed finishes. The courtyard to the right and the day centre to the left.
